Emma Raby

Gemma O'Callaghan

Mike Mason

Courtney Dicmas

Above is only a really small sample of the beautiful work on display at Foyles and I would love to have taken photos of everyones board and dummy book(s). I was completely overwhelmed and felt so very proud to be on the course. I know(ish, I will know more this time next year) how much blood, sweat and tears these guys have put in to get to this point and the respect I have for all of them is off the scale. They all (and i do mean all) have produced work that shows an individuality and a personally developed visual language. I'm certainly looking forward to showing my work alongside them at Bologna Childrens Book Fair 2013.

Duxford research trip

i took my son to duxford imperial war museum as i wanted to do some research for my masters project, they have some wonderful machines there and it helps that my two year old adores it too. i'm not much of a photographer so my images do not do any of the beautiful planes justice.

visit the duxford website here

more sketches, this time its vikings sans horns

a viking ship - apparently there is no evidence that the vikings ever wore helmets with horns on. i would always have drawn vikings with horns but maybe for this project i need to be a little more historically accurate. or i could just use artistic license and have them with flowers in their hair. we are aware of the stories of vikings pillaging and burning villages but only a small minority did this, its a shame the rest who were peaceful land harvesting farmers were tarred with the same brush eh!

my new hero - the wimmelbilderbuch

ali mitgutsch - love at first sight

lovely busy worlds

illustrations from Enid Blyton

 Richard Scarry's busy worlds

the unmistakable Mr Quentin Blake

i am starting to research for my dissertation and at the moment it is a pleasure looking back at my inspirations from years ago. i loved all of the above illustrators and their books, i think they have influenced my love of busy, intricate worlds more than i would ever have thought.
